Scoliosis is a complex three dimensional deformity of the spine consisting of lateral curvature, vertebral rotation, and commonly hypokyphosis deformity or flat upper back. The most common form of scoliosis is Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). AIS occurs in healthy children prior to skeletal maturity. Spinal curve correction can be achieved if AIS is diagnosed prior to skeletal maturity. Early detection is key to the prevention of the common sequelae of this condition namely back pain, cardiopulmonary problems, and psychosocial concerns. Back pain in AIS is rare which accounts for the reason why patients and caregivers miss the window of opportunity for correction. It is not until spinal deformity becomes more apparent that patients and caregivers seek medical advice. In some children especially the ones with compensated spinal curves, trunk deformity does not manifest until almost close to skeletal maturity. Back pain normally occurs with advanced curve progression during which time correction through conservative treatment offers no benefit and the likelihood of surgery becomes a possibility.

Sound clinical decision making in the management of AIS is dependent upon the clinician’s thorough understanding of the disorder and the available conservative treatment alternatives. A successful AIS rehabilitation starts with a knowledgeable clinician and a well informed patient. Knowledge of the natural history of AIS can assist clinicians in determining a more accurate prognosis and can assist in developing an effective treatment plan. The treatment of AIS should be comprehensive with the primary goal of preventing curve progression prior to skeletal maturity in order to prevent the long term complications such as pulmonary dysfunction, chronic pain, impaired balance and posture. For children entering puberty, self image and aesthetics are important considerations in AIS treatment. Improving quality of life and the psychological well being of a child with AIS is another reasons why we treat AIS. One of the most effective, evidenced based conservative scoliosis treatment is the Schroth Method. This method was developed by Christa Lehnert-Schroth (divorced Weiss) in the 1970s and is widely used now in the conservative management of scoliosis

Our practice utilizes the Schroth method and our knowledgeable clinician is fully trained and is Advanced Schroth Best Practice Certified.

We Offer Conservative Management of Scoliosis Using The Schroth Best Practice Method.

Schroth Best Practice Method, an evidence based scoliosis treatment, focuses on changing postural habits in everyday life. Exercises are easy and practical with little to no use for props and other equipment. Patients achieve postural awareness through active self muscle contraction techniques.

Exercises are customized according to patient’s curve pattern.

Treatment program consists of:

  • Schroth Best Practice Method
  • Yoga for Scoliosis
  • Pilates
  • Biomechanical assessment & treatment for alignment issues such as problems with leg length discrepancies, flat feet or high arches, or other alignment problems
  • Mechanical Diagnosis & Therapy of the spine (MDT)

We offer group sessions, one-on-one evaluations and ongoing weekly treatments, one time 2 - 4 hour workshop for out of town patients. The workshop consists of scoliosis evaluation, patient education to ensure understanding of scoliosis and individual curve pattern and customized home exercise program. A video call is also available for follow up visits, fees apply. Although video call is convenient, one-on-one PT follow up visit is strongly recommended.
